Roxane Gay on the Open Letter - The New York Times

Open letters are not new; they have served as rhetorical tools for at least two centuries, from Émile Zola’s “J’accuse” to the Rev. Open letters are persuasive arguments, but they are also entreaties. Please, hear me, the writers of open letters implore. I am not a fan of open letters, though I recognize their value. The open letter, as a genre is, in this way, far too limited.

Colman Domingo's Time Is Now

NEW YORK (AP) — Colman Domingo has a commanding physical presence, an expressive face and soulful eyes. His performance in George C. Wolfe's “Rustin" — Domingo's first time atop the call sheet — has made the 53-year-old journeyman actor a favorite for a best actor Oscar nomination. Though celebrated — Colman shared in an Obie award for ensemble — once the play closed, Domingo found himself bartending again. “I would be talking with Mark Rickler the production designer, ‘Oh, Colman could do that.’ Part of my brain would go, ‘Oh, Colman could do that,’' recalls Wolfe. “And she clutches her heart and says, ‘Oh, Colman.’ And then we started hiking again.”___Follow AP Film Writer Jake Coyle at: http://twitter.com/jakecoyleAP

Toulmouche wasn’t a feminist painter, but his work speaks to women todayToulmouche painted scenes of elegant, wealthy French women in domestic settings, often chronicling their romantic exploits. NEW YORK (AP) — The fallout from the actors strike, now past 100 days, has been widespread throughout the film industry. As the strike pushes into Hollywood’s awards season, it’s increasingly muting the reception for some of the best performances of the year. With so many out of work due to the strike, no one should cry for muzzled Oscar campaigns. Just as Carney’s “Once” was a breakthrough for Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, Hewson is a revelation in “Flora and Son.” (Streaming on Apple TV+)COLMAN DOMINGOColman Domingo has long been a powerhouse on screen. Half of wedding vendors say higher costs of goods, from food to flowers to gas, are driving them to increase their service prices. A growing share of couples are adding cash funds to their wedding registries — some even earmarked specifically to help pay for the wedding itself. But with their surprise wedding winnings, Moore estimates their wedding day will be valued at more than $16,500. Usually, couples who win the free services are asked to promote the businesses on social media, or to appear in their marketing materials online and elsewhere. Now a couple of years after her wedding, Brallier continues to shout out the vendors who gifted her and her husband, Jacob, 26, a dream wedding.

The average cost of a wedding, nationally, this year is $29,000, up $1,000 from 2022, according to online wedding planning site Zola. It said searches for alternative weddings – especially underwater weddings – have jumped 305% on its platform. “Though slightly challenging logistically, it should be interesting to see the data for underwater weddings in 2023,” she said. “Wedding photographer Kimber Greenwood, who specializes in underwater wedding photography, is booked to photograph 20 of them this year. The wedding industry should enjoy the recovery, because it may not last.

What’s the last great book you read? Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time? Most classic novels are classic novels I’ve only read recently for the first time. Crate & Barrel is allowing Bed Bath & Beyond customers to transfer their registries to furniture and home-decor chain. Crate & Barrel says customers who created wedding or baby gift registries at Bed Bath & Beyond or its BuyBuy Baby brand can transfer them to the Illinois-based furniture and home-decor retailer. To do a transfer, the customer would need to create a Crate & Barrel or Crate & Kids registry, take a screenshot of their Bed, Bath & Beyond or BuyBuy Baby registry, then bring it into a Crate & Barrel store. And stores like JoAnn, The Container Store, and Big Lots are all accepting Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. Do you have a wedding or baby registry through Bed Bath and Beyond?

It’s OK to Spend $12.50 on a Wedding Dress Now

More brides are saying “No” to the dress. At least the one that costs thousands of dollars. Breaking with the tradition of tearful try-ons portrayed in reality shows like TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress,” brides-to-be are cutting budgets, wearing hand-me-downs and even hitting Goodwill for gowns. Around 27% of those getting married in 2023 said they are willing to splurge on attire, compared with 47% of those who got hitched in 2022, according to planning site Zola’s annual survey of roughly 4,000 engaged couples.
In 2011, a gorilla named Zola gained internet fame when the Calgary Zoo posted a video that showed him spinning in circles on his knuckles and heels with what appeared to be a huge grin on his face. Humans’ love of spinning around in circles, especially during childhood, is evidenced by the enduring popularity of playground merry-go-rounds, revolving fun park rides and the irresistible draw of somersaulting down a hill. But new research suggests that humans are not alone in their pursuit of spin-induced buzzes. According to findings published last month in the journal Primates, other great ape species also seem to regularly enjoy stimulating their senses through spinning, possibly even in pursuit of altered mental states. “So it’s really cool to find that other primates do this, too, and that they seem to do it for the same reason that children do: because it’s fun and exhilarating.”
David’s needs bachelorettes, not just brides
  + stars: | 2023-04-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, April 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - With marriage rates on the decline, David’s Bridal has once again tied itself in a knot. Last time this happened in 2018, David’s courted a group of lenders led by Oaktree to save it. loadingFunding for nuptial-related companies has been on the decline since, as has business at David’s. Modern brides are opting for cheaper casual and secondhand dresses over fancy getups, but they appear more reticent to compromise on pre-wedding soirees. It suggests perhaps that David's fresh start should embrace an old saying, with a twist: always the bachelorette, never the bride.
[1/5] Members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) march during a strike over wage disputes, at the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus outside Johannesburg, South Africa, March 13, 2023. REUTERS/Siphiwe SibekoJOHANNESBURG, March 13 (Reuters) - The South African Labour Appeal Court on Monday ordered striking state healthcare workers to end a week-long walkout that has affected services in some of the country's major hospitals, the health department said. National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) members went on strike last week after wage talks with the government failed. The labour relations act prohibits essential workers from engaging in strike action which is detrimental to healthcare services with a risk of loss of life, he told a press briefing. The South African military said it had deployed medics to help in the affected hospitals at the request of the health department.
The explosive wedding boom seen last year is winding down, but the average cost of nuptials is still going up, according to new data from Zola. Couples will shell out an average of $29,000 this year to say "I do" – up from $28,000 last year, the digital wedding planning platform found. The expected jump is in large part because of the rising, inflationary costs that vendors are facing, the company said. Catering costs and other labor-intensive services are a particular pain point, Thom said, as vendors raise wages to support workers. "Florals or installations or anything that's really decor-heavy that requires extra labor on site, those costs are rising dramatically," she said.

There, in 1815, she is presumed to be property. But, per Butler, matters are not that simple either. As every narrative corner reveals another electrifying twist, “Kindred” has to be addressed in broad terms, lest spoilers come back to haunt the reviewer. Suffice to say that “Kindred” the book has been included in high-school and college curricula and was made into a graphic novel of 2017. The playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has done the new adaptation and serves as showrunner ( Janicza Bravo of “Lemon” and “Zola” directed the arresting pilot), and a few tweaks have been made to the original story.
The actor Candace Cameron Bure is facing backlash following her recent comments about her new TV project that she said will prioritize portraying "traditional marriage." “I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,” she reportedly told the magazine. A representative for Cameron Bure did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. On its social media pages, the Great American Family describes its programming as "celebrating faith, family and country." In a September interview with Variety, Cameron Bure said she would have an "executive role" at the network and act in its films.
CNN —Candace Cameron Bure has moved on from being Hallmark Channel’s queen of holiday movies. In a recently published interview with the Wall Street Journal, the actress talked about leaving that cable channel to work with another, the faith based Great American Family. “My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” Bure told the publication. Bill Abbott, chief executive of Great American Media, oversees the new network. “I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,” Cameron Bure told the Journal.
Some of Caraway's pots and pans are now sold by Target stores. Online cookware company Caraway is making its biggest push yet into brick-and-mortar stores, with its pots and pans debuting in 350 Target stores this week. Target will become the largest retailer to sell the brand in stores. Select Caraway products also are sold in 80 Crate & Barrel stores, 80 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and 20 Nordstrom outlets. Over time, he said he expects Caraway to get about half of sales from other retailers' websites or stores.
The DTC home-goods brand Caraway just raised $35 million in funding, the company told Insider. The DTC retailer announced a $35 million funding round on Wednesday to grow its product selection, head count, and overall retail presence. Being in stores also helps Caraway compete more effectively with other home brands, Nathan said. The brand's retail sales this year were up 300% through August compared to the same period in 2021. Caraway aims to keep its customer-acquisition spend low enough so that a customer's first purchase is profitable for the brand.
Some couples are using wedding registries to help fund down payments, Financial Times reported. Wedding registry websites have seen a spike in couples asking for cash from their guests. Zola and The Knot, two wedding registry and planning websites, told the Financial Times that more couples are using their registry to ask for help with raising funds for a deposit or other housing costs. Zola said that three quarters of couples using its services ask for money and that the number of cash funds relating to housing has shot up since 2019. In August the national median mortgage payment amounted to $1,839, data from Mortgage Bankers Association shows, while there was a 33% increase in monthly payments in the first eight months of this year.
